From traditional paper maps to digital
mapping, cartography has become, more than ever, an almost inexhaustible supply
of resources. Its rapid renewal, as a result of the latest technological and
scientific progress, has a decisive influence in the generation of new examples
and in the publication of new spatial results of prominent general interest.
The consideration of cartographic resources in this collection of teaching resources includes access to a comprehensive set of maps, which are not only necessary to forge a broad educational space conception, but also to build a well-defined concept of the personal world. It is important, therefore, to consider the set of rules, regulations, codes, types and uses that are needed to make a map. To achieve these preliminary objectives, priority has given to work with concepts (such as latitude, longitude, map projection, legend, scale, etc.) and to relate to different conceptions of cartography such as the approach to the maps as sources of information and consultation through different institutional tools.

In this way, cartographic resources are consolidated as one of the main tools for education and performance of professional activities in Geography. Cartographic resources incorporated in this repository are organized following three principles: provide quick access to resources which facilitate the approach and understanding of basic concepts in cartography -through teaching resources of National Geographic Institute (IGN), for example-; facilitate the consultation of cartographic general viewers -such as Spatial Data Infrastructure of Spain or Iberpix (IGN)- or thematic –IGN, Geological and Mining Institute of Spain (IGME) - and compile a selection of atlases from different sources and content which provide access to global, regional or local maps. Information provided by all these resources is of interest both from the point of view of their technical implementation and development, and for the interpretation and understanding of their specific geographic content.
